Syys

Syys is a system based on Compaq Deskpro assembled by me and wolf.

While looking for a PS/2 keyboard we discovered enough old computer junk to assemble a full computer out of. Mainboard, CPU, GPU, PSU, and the case are from the Deskpro as I originally received it, while disks, majority of RAM, and the NIC come from elsewhere. The system has no CPU fan, sound card, or even a beeper, so it is almost completely silent – except when the disks are spinning.

Tech specs
CPU Intel Pentium II @ 447MHz
RAM 192MiB of PC100 SDRAM
GPU Matrox G200 AGP VRAM expanded to 16MiB
Disk 1 (/) 1.2GiB Quantum Fireball (original)
Disk 2 (/var) 2.0GiB Quantum Bigfoot CY
NIC 3Com Etherlink III ISA We had to manually change IRQ from 9 to 10 due to conflict with ACPI
OS Gentoo Linux musl-i686

Getting Gentoo installed on syys was bit of an adventure, since it does not meet the minimum requirements. We had to – among other things – repeatedly compile our own kernels with required drivers, reformat /var to increase inode count (and then do that again), and wait for over an hour while git compiled. Nevertheless, majority of packages were compiled locally and the system is surprisingly usable.

Update: It can run a Minecraft server

Update 2: Lagtrain (without audio, since we lack a sound card) playing with mplayer -vo fbdev2
